100 COUNTRY MILES
I’d walk 100 country miles for you Darlin’
With 100 achin’ blisters on my feet
I’d wear out 100 pair of shoes, just to lose these lonesome blues
I’d walk 100 miles darlin’ just to get you back with me
I’ve been cryin’ ever since you left me
I see your face in the shadows on the wall
outside the window the wind is moanin’ softly
I hear your name in it’s mournful lonesome call
These old Country boots are set to do their walkin’
They’ve been down this dusty road a time or two
So I’ll just pull these old boots on and I’ll just be good as gone
And set my feet to ramblin’ on my way on back to you
Come some fine and wondrous sunny mornin’
When the birds are singing high upon the pine
At your door these boots will come a knockin’
And once again your true love will be mine
WHERE THERE’S A HEAVEN
Some say that in heaven there are streets paved with gold
And diamonds and rubies and riches untold
But for me it’s a dirt road and a good horse to ride
And a mountain of blue sky with you at my side
Where There’s a heaven far across the Divide
Through Timeless expanses past where planets collide
There’s a place that is ageless where on dirt roads we fly
Someday in heaven with you at my side
Some say they’ll fly with eagles over cities so fair
With a band full of angels blowing trumpets in the air
But for me it’s a good horse running 3/4 time
Down a well traveled dirt road with my darlin’ so fine
PHOTOGRAPHS
She sits there by the window in a fading winter dusk of twilight blue
The night it comes so quickly that she almost thinks its never left the room
Through 60 years of memories his presence it lingers with her still
Now all she has are Photographs that sit there upon the window sill
Now once upon a memory she danced with him in moonlight by the sea
He gazed into her eyes of green and promised her that he would never leave
But time it tells a truth that cannot change and can never compromise
Now all she has are photographs that sit there in the waning winter light
She reaches out to him just like she has so many times before
She longs to feel him now she waits for his hand upon the door
And his spirit it still lingers there in a jacket that hangs upon the chair
Like photographs and memories of all that they had loved and they had shared
Now no one know where love goes when its blown away on fallen winter leaves
Does it pass through endless twilight does it wish upon a gentle evening breeze
Will it fly away on nightbird’s wings or wait upon the evening’s winter chill
Or does it live on Photographs that sit upon the window sill
INDIGO
Night falls in shades of indigo and starlight
Hues of a melancholy sky
It whispers through the aspen trees lingers in the falling leaves
This moonlit night indigo
Cry of the nightbird calling out to me
Part of an ageless mystery
It’s song surrounds this lonely room echos off the lamplight blue
This moonlit night indigo
Northern lights begin their dance of fantasy and fire
They flicker in an endless sky of longing and desire
They dance to all the falling stars sun and moon and turning tide
They weave their colors through the night’s ever changing sky
COLD WINDS OF WINTER
You said that you loved me said you’d always be true
And darlin’ you told me I could wish for the moon
If wishes were horses then a beggar I’d be
Blowin’ down these night street like the brown winter leaves
When the cold wind of winter blow the leaves from the trees
What you’ll hear from the thunder is my heart breaking true
Just the sound of my leaving a goodbye on the night breeze
when the cold winds of winter come blowing on through
I’ll never deceive you got nowhere to go
Just my heart to guide me through a love that’s grown cold
And just like the snow goose flies to whither she goes
I’ll be off with the first snow to where south breezes they blow
I’ll always remember that first summer day
That warm summer rain you first came my way
But just like the summer passes into the fall
I’ll be gone by November with the cold winds sad call
LOAVES AND FISHES
In the door of Loaves and Fishes you can see her standing there
Just a worn out rose in torn up clothes with tangles in her hair
And she just can’t seem to figure out those voices in her head
So she waits there by the mission door for the breaking of the bread
For the breaking of the bread
Now Billy was a foster kid that time just cast away
Just a skinny little redhaired boy not worth the time of day
Now he stands there in his worn out shoes with an old beat up guitar
Just hoping that the song he sings will wipe away the scars
Will wipe away the scars
And the water turns to wine or so it’s always said
By a solitary fisherman who was raised up from the dead
with worn out hands he breaks the bread catches fishes in his net
He feed the poor the weary souls that a busy world forgets
with the fishes in his net
Now the war was over years ago and still the dreams remain
Of the brothers he had fought beside now he drinks away the pain
Now his family just gave up on him those many years ago
Now loaves and fishes knows his name and calls his spirit home
Calls his wandering spirit home
The homeless and the hungry the lost and the insane
They live on every street in town and they yearn to have a name
And you know they could be you or me or some mother’s lovely child
Just hoping for some state of grace or someone’s mercy mild
THE SMALL STUFF
Do you ever get the feeling that the whole world’s turned against you
And you’re waiting for the other shoe to fall
Do you ever feel you’re on your last leg and you drew the short straw
And your waiting for the other shoe to fall
are you waiting for your ship to come in the middle of a hurricane
And finding that the lifeboat has a hole
Well if you are take heart my friend and know you’re not the only one
who finds themself with no place else to fall
Don’t sweat the small stuff you’ll only be more bothered by the big stuff
Don’t let the bad stuff get you down and make you lose you’re hair
Just let the good stuff be the thing that keeps you holding on
Don’t let the bad stuff leave you cryin’ let the good stuff leave you laughin’
Leave the small stuff to those who really care
Are you waiting for the next big thing to reach right out and touch you
And finding out it’s not that big at all
Are you hoping you’ll get over it before it figures out you are
Really the one who dropped the ball
is there somewhere else you’d rather be but somewhere is a foreign film
Where no one speaks a word you understand
Well if you are you’re not alone there’s more of us in this old world
And frankly some of us don’t give a damn
THING CALLED LOVE
There’s a feeling in the air
Being carried on the breeze
And it’s calling out your name
Through the tops of the trees
It comes creeping through the window
And it’ll bring you to your knees
It’s a thing called Love
It’s where it all begins
It’s a garden of thorns
It’s like original sin
It’s like Adam and Eve
Cast away from Eden
It’s like a mighty rushing river
And you can’t resist the call
It leaves you slipping and a sliding
Over a big waterfall
And when you finally hit the bottom
You find that you have lost it all
It’s a thing called Love
It’s where it all begins
It’s a garden of thorns
It’s like original sin
It’s like Adam and Eve
Cast away from Eden
MARIA
In the early light of morning you can hear the screen door slam
As Maria runs outside to work the vineyards with her hands
She’s barely 17 and there’s baby on the way
Soon she’s to be married but for now there’s just today
Oh Maria where do your dreams take you now
Maria is it motherhood with all it love and laughter and the joys and sorrows in which you believe
Oh Maria will your dreams die young and hard
Or will they rise above these California fields to somewhere where you are young and free
She came from Oaxaca to the fields of the San Joaquin
Now Maria ties the grape vines shakes the sweat out of her eyes
And the day turns hot and thirsty and her hands they feel the pain
She tries to think of better things so she can dream again
Oh my Maria where do you go to when your dreaming
Maria are you dreaming that this this baby child you whose life you give will make a better way
Oh Maria is this all life has to give
Or will you rise above these California fields to a place to where dreams are here to stay
All ever you wanted was a family of your own
Someone to call you sweet things and to see your children grown
But life it has a way of not turning as planned
So you just go on believing in the best way that you can
Oh Maria will yours be a promise left unfilled
Maria will you be chasing down the wind somewhere or safe within your saviors loving arms
Oh Maria yours is a life that left unsaid
Or will you rise above these California fields to somewhere safe and free from harm
Or will you rise above these California fields to somewhere safe and free from harm
